“Presbyterian” refers to our form of church government. Each congregation is under the oversight of a plurality of elders, who are also part of broader courts known as Presbyteries and Synod.
Our beliefs stem from a full commitment to the authority of the Bible as the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of the Triune God. We acknowledge our total inability to save ourselves and, by faith alone, trust in Christ alone, for our salvation. On special occasions in both the Old and New Testaments, believers covenanted together that they would obey the Lord. At the time of the Reformation, believers in Scotland adopted this practice for mutual protection and for the advancement of Biblical Christianity. On at least three occasions (1581, 1638, and 1643) the entire nation covenanted in this way. These covenants embraced the whole orb of Christian faith and experience. They also maintained that the King (or the State) cannot govern the Church, and that the State itself must recognize the supreme Kingship of Christ. These Christian believers, known as Covenanters (from their support of the covenants), insisted on "the crown rights of King Jesus," which brought them into conflict with those who supported "the divine rights of kings." The Blue Banner bearing the motto "For Christ's Crown and Covenant" originated as a battle flag for these Covenanters. The Reformed Presbyterian Church is a continuation of the Reformation-era Church of Scotland, and treasures the testimony and heritage that God has given us.
If you are searching for a church home, please consider these four advantages:
1. We are mature– Many American churches begin upon an unstable foundation of schism (unnecessary sinful divisions). The RPC is one of just a small number of evangelical churches that was not. We continue to grow spiritually, numerically, and geographically. Age is a blessing in that we have resolved many of the issues that plague immature denominations.
2. We are committed to the Reformed Christian Faith – Some churches are identified by the name of their ministers. Though blessed with many able teachers, the one Name most identified with the R.P.C. is 'King Jesus'. The R.P.C. has an unbroken tradition of commitment to faithful creedal subscription, Biblical church government, and pure Christian worship.
3. We are going in the right direction – By grace, we have maintained a balanced thrust between doctrinal integrity, reformed piety, and evangelistic outreach. The proclamation of the whole counsel of Christ is our emphasis.
4. We have the right attitude – By grace, there is a sense of Biblical unity, a peaceable spirit, and a loyalty to the Church that marks the R.P.C. We are willing to defend the truth, but our zeal is tempered with a marked Christian gentility.
